Sonia Syngal is an Indian-Canadian businesswoman who formerly served as the chief executive officer of Gap, Inc., the largest specialty apparel company in the U.S.
Who is Sonia Syngal?
Syngal was born in India to Sushma and Satya Syngal before her family immigrated to Canada when she was a small child.
She eventually relocated to the US, where she earned her mechanical engineering bachelor’s degree from Kettering University in 1993 and her manufacturing systems engineering master’s degree from Stanford University in 1995.
Syngal has held positions at a number of Fortune 500 firms, including six years at Ford Motor Company and ten years at Sun Microsystems, where she oversaw the manufacturing operations, logistics, and supply chain management departments.
Syngal joined Gap Inc. in 2004 and has held a variety of executive positions, including Managing Director for the company’s European operations and Senior Vice President for both the International and Outlet divisions of Gap Inc.
She managed Gap Inc.’s global supply chain and redefined the company’s product-to-market strategy for its portfolio of brands while serving as executive vice president of global supply chain and product operations.
Syngal oversaw Old Navy, Gap Inc.’s largest brand, from 2016 to 2020. During her leadership, the brand’s sales increased from $7 billion to $8 billion, it opened more than 1,200 stores in North America, it scaled its e-commerce site to become the fourth-largest apparel site in the United States, and it developed competitive omnichannel capabilities.
In March 2020, she was appointed the company’s CEO. She oversees a workforce of more than 100,000 employees and the company’s portfolio of lifestyle brands, which includes Old Navy, Gap, Banana Republic, and Athleta.
At the time of her selection as CEO in March 2020, Syngal was one of only three women CEOs of color among the 37 female CEOs of Fortune 500 corporations.
Syngal also serves on the steering committee of the Fashion Pact, a global alliance of businesses in the apparel and textile sectors dedicated to three primary environmental objectives: halting global warming, regenerating biodiversity, and safeguarding the oceans.
