Shinzo Abe, the former prime minister of Japan, was shot and killed on Friday morning in Nara, Japan, according to the BBC.
An NHK reporter on the scene heard two gunshots while Abe was giving a speech in the southern city of Nara before Abe passed out in the street.
Abe received two wounds, one under his left side of the breast and one on the right side of his neck, according to the Fire and Disaster Management Agency.
A 41-year-old man was detained, and Abe was treated for his injuries at Nara Medical University in Kashihara City before tragically passing away.
