Newton Leroy Gingrich was born as Newton Leroy McPherson at the Harrisburg Hospital on June 17, 1943, in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, United States. He is 78 years old as of 2022.
Newt Gingrich was born to his mother, Kathleen “Kit” Daugherty who passed away in 2003. His biological father, Newton Searles McPherson married his mother in September 1942, when she was 16 and he was 19.
Newt Gingrich’s parents split and he was later adopted by his mother’s new husband, Robert Gingrich. Robert was a career Army officer who served tours in Korea and Vietnam.
Newt Gingrich has lived for a period of time in places including Orléans, France and Stuttgart, Germany. He is of English, German and Scots-Irish ancestry. He has three younger half-sisters including Candace and Susan Gingrich, and Roberta Brown.
Newt Gingrich also has a half-sister and half-brother named Randy McPherson, from his biological father’s side. Talking about his educational background, he graduated from Baker High School in Columbus, Georgia, in 1961.
Newt Gingrich went on to receive a Bachelor of Arts degree in history from Emory University in Atlanta in 1965. He then pursued his graduate studies at Tulane University where he earned an M.A. (1968) as well as a PhD in European history in 1971. He later became a professor of history and geography at the University of West Georgia in the 1970s.
Newt Gingrich became the first Republican in the history of Georgia’s 6th congressional district to win an election to the U.S. House of Representatives in November 1978. He has served as the 50th speaker of the United States House of Representatives from 1995 to 1999.
Times had earlier named Newt Gingrich in 1995 as the “Man of the Year” for “his role in ending the four-decades-long Democratic majority in the House”.
