Since the killings that took place the previous summer, Mr. Murdaugh, who hails from a prominent legal family in rural South Carolina, has already been hit with a slew of charges involving fraud and theft.

Alex Murdaugh is an heir to a powerful legal dynasty in South Carolina, and one of his lawyers said on Tuesday that the police had indicated they planned to indict Mr. Murdaugh in connection with the murders of his wife and son.

The investigation into the deaths of Mrs. Murdaugh and Mr. Murdaugh’s son has dragged on for years, and no one has been able to determine who was responsible for their deaths.

Mr. Murdaugh had already been facing a variety of charges of fraud and theft, which led to his arrest in September 2021 and a wave of subsequent indictments. The events that led to Mr. Murdaugh’s arrest can be found in the following sentence.

Maggie Murdaugh, who was 52 years old and Paul Murdaugh, who was 22, were both fatally shot at the family’s rural hunting estate in Islandton, which is approximately 65 miles west of Charleston. However, no one had been formally accused in the deaths of Maggie and Paul Murdaugh.

Jim Griffin, one of Mr. Murdaugh’s attorneys, stated that state police investigators had informed some of Mr. Murdaugh’s relatives that they planned to seek an indictment against Mr. Murdaugh for the murders this week.

The allegations against Mr. Murdaugh stem from the deaths of two people. The lawyer’s account was not confirmed by a spokeswoman for the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division, which has been investigating the case.

On the evening of June 7, 2021, Mr. Murdaugh called 911 and told a dispatcher that he had returned home to find the bodies of his wife and son lying near a dog kennel on the family’s remote estate, which is located far back from the road at the end of a winding driveway. Mr. Murdaugh sounded deeply shaken as he relayed this information to the dispatcher.

Mr. Murdaugh, age 54, is a member of the fourth generation of his family to practice law. His father, grandfather, and great-grandfather all held the position of chief prosecutor in a district that encompasses a significant portion of the Lowcountry region of South Carolina.

However, in the weeks and months that followed the double homicide, Mr. Murdaugh’s life went downhill in a significant way.

After the law firm that was founded by his ancestors discovered that Mr. Murdaugh had been stealing money from the firm, they fired him.

After that, according to the police, he devised a bizarre plan to have one of his distant cousins shoot him on a road that was mostly deserted.

Curtis Edward Smith, Mr. Murdaugh’s cousin, fired a shot that did not hit Mr. Murdaugh, and later, Mr. Murdaugh was charged with fraud, while Mr. Smith was charged with assisted suicide as well as other crimes.

Additional charges were brought against Mr. Murdaugh and Mr. Smith by the prosecution the month before last. The charges allege that the defendants laundered millions of dollars over the course of several years as part of a distribution network for the painkiller oxycodone.

In addition to this, Mr. Murdaugh is accused of stealing millions of dollars from customers and other people, including the family of a housekeeper who worked for the Murdaugh family and who died after falling on the stairs of their home early one morning in 2018.

Mr. Murdaugh admitted the previous month that he had improperly pocketed the money from the settlement and that he owed $4.3 million to the sons of Gloria Satterfield, who worked as a housekeeper.

In October, Mr. Murdaugh was remanded to jail on charges that were connected to the settlement that he had reached with the housekeeper’s family. Prior to this, he had been briefly released from jail following his initial arrest.

As a result of the theft that he committed against the Satterfield family, the Supreme Court of South Carolina issued an order on Tuesday that disbarred Mr. Murdaugh.

According to Mr. Griffin, Mr. Murdaugh has not changed his story and maintains that he is innocent in the deaths of his wife and son.

Paul Murdaugh was facing charges of boating under the influence at the time of his death. He was accused of driving a boat into a bridge after a night of drinking, which resulted in the death of Mallory Beach, who was 19 years old and a passenger on the boat.

Murdaugh was subsequently killed. Ms. Beach’s family had filed a lawsuit against the Murdaughs, and the lawyer representing them was trying to compel Alex Murdaugh to disclose information about his finances prior to the murder of his wife and son.

As a result of the killings, the boat crash was subjected to intense scrutiny once again, this time focusing on the question of whether or not Paul Murdaugh had received preferential treatment from the authorities, and new questions were raised regarding the Murdaugh family.

The state police have begun looking into the circumstances surrounding Ms. Satterfield’s passing, and they announced a month ago that they intended to exhume her body.

The death of a 19-year-old man named Stephen Smith, who was discovered dead along a road approximately 10 miles from the Murdaugh home in 2015, has also been reexamined by investigators. Smith’s body was discovered in 2015.

Because both of those deaths were ruled to be accidental, no one has been charged in connection with either of them.
