Damian Casey, a prominent Tyrone hurler, has passed away.
On Friday, Eoghan Ruadh, a Dungannon club member, died in a horrific swimming accident in Spain.
Casey, 29, led Tyrone with 14 points, nine free throws, two 65s, and three points from play in last month’s Nicky Rackard Cup final victory against Roscommon.
What was Damian Casey’s cause of death?
It was his 40th appearance for the county as a senior. Casey had the incredible distinction of scoring in all four championship games, totaling 414 points.
Tyrone achieved promotion to Division 2B by defeating Armagh in the Division 3A final at Owenbeg in April, with Casey scoring 1-10.
He totaled nearly 1,000 points in league and championship play (39-908).
Casey, regarded as one of, if not the best Tyrone hurler, led the county to four county hurling titles last year. In the Lory Meagher Cup in 2012, he made his championship debut with the Red Hands. This was his tenth year in a row competing in the Rackard Cup.
“Heartbreak and sadness may come in many forms, but they are particularly harsh when brought about by the abrupt death of someone young, creative, outgoing, and in the prime of life,” Tyrone GAA said late yesterday night on its website.
“As a result, the news of Damian Casey’s terrible death, a superb hurler just at the zenith of his abilities, has left Gaelic Tyrone completely rocked.”
“This startling news is unbelievable,” Tyrone County Chair Michael Kerr said, astonished. ‘Someone who gave honor, happiness, and basic, honest joy to our whole sounty, and far beyond, has passed away, and it’s difficult to comprehend.’
“Sean, Susan, Louise, and Catherine, as well as Damian’s extended family and numerous friends and acquaintances, his team-mates, and the Gaels of Dungannon and Tyrone, face extremely trying days ahead.”
“Our hearts go out to them, and our attention now must be on giving the assistance and comfort that they will so desperately need.”
“Damian Casey was Tyrone’s and hurling’s great gift. We were better off because he was here, and we’re worse off now that he’s gone.
