Who is Max Keeping?
Keeping started his reporting career in the late 1950s and was born in Grand Bank, Newfoundland. At the age of 16, he began working as the sports director of the St. John’s Evening Telegram. Later, he was employed by VOCM and CJCH in Halifax. In 1965, Keeping relocated to Ottawa and started working as a parliamentary reporter for CFRA radio and eventually CTV News.In the fall of 1972, Keeping returned to Newfoundland to run as a Progressive Conservative in the seat of Burin—Burgeo in the federal election. With 25% of the vote, he finished behind Liberal incumbent Don Jamieson in second place.
Following the election, he went back to Ottawa. Due He was unable to return to his legislative bureau position at CTV because of his political campaign. He began working at CJOH in November 1972 as the local news director, and from that time until March 2010, he served as the station’s news anchor, making him one of the country’s longest-tenured newscasters. Over the course of his more than 40 years in Ottawa, Keeping rose to fame there. He participated actively in numerous charitable campaigns both inside and outside of his journalistic organization. He had served as the CHEO telethon’s longtime master of ceremonies. He is thought to have assisted in the collecting of more than $100 million for charity in the Ottawa region. He received a 2003 Gemini Humanitarian Award for his efforts. The most recent awards that Keeping received were a doctorate from the University of Ottawa and an honorary position as patron of Learning for a Cause, a nonprofit educational program that publishes and supports high school students’ creative writing.
On December 3, 2009, Keeping declared that he would leave his position as news anchor on March 26, 2010. The legislative bureau chief for CTV News, Graham Richardson, made the announcement on-air with colleague anchor Carol Anne Meehan and Keeping during the same show. Richardson would take over for him. After retiring, Keeping began working as the “community ambassador” for the television station.
In 2012, he underwent treatment for colorectal cancer. In 2014, he received a diagnosis of incurable lung cancer. On October 1, 2015, Keeping passed away.
