Matthew Paige Damon is a screenwriter, film producer, and actor from the United States. Listed as one of Forbes’ most bankable stars, his films have grossed over $3.88 billion at the North American box office, making him one of the highest-grossing actors of all time. He has won an Academy Award and two Golden Globe Awards, as well as nominations for three British Academy Film Awards, six Screen Actors Guild Awards, and seven Primetime Emmy Awards.

Damon’s acting career began in high school theater productions. In the film Mystic Pizza, he made his professional acting debut (1988). He went on to appear in the films Courage Under Fire (1996) and The Rainmaker (1997). In 1997, he and Ben Affleck co-wrote and starred in Good Will Hunting, which won them the Academy and Golden Globe awards for Best Screenplay.

Damon was born on October 8, 1970, in Cambridge, Massachusetts, the second son of stockbroker Kent Telfer Damon (1942-2017) and Nancy Carlsson-Paige (b. 1946), an early childhood education professor at Lesley University. His father was of English and Scottish ancestry, while his mother was of Finnish and Swedish ancestry; her surname had been changed from Pajari to Paige.

Damon and his family relocated to Newton for two years. His parents divorced when he was two years old, and he and his brother moved to Cambridge with their mother, where they lived in a six-family communal house. Kyle is a sculptor and artist. He stated that as a lonely teenager, he felt he did not belong. He struggled to define his own identity as a result of his mother’s “by the book” approach to child-rearing.
