Flag Day is a yearly holiday that will be observed on June 14, 2022.
The event was initially observed on June 14, 1777, and it has a long history that dates back to the founding of the United States.

What is Flag Day and why do we celebrate it?

Flag Day was established in 1777 to mark the adoption of the official American flag.
During the Revolutionary War, when each colony had its own flag, the flag was designed to bring the 13 colonies together.
The objective of the American flag, which was formed with 13 stars and 13 stripes to represent the colonies, was described in a resolution passed by Congress.

“Resolved, that the flag of the thirteen United States shall be thirteen stripes, alternate red and white; that the Union is thirteen stars, white on a blue field, indicating a new constellation,” John Adams remarked at a meeting of the Continental Congress in Philadelphia in 1977.

Since it was named the country’s official flag, the American flag has undergone 27 alterations, the most recent of which occurred on July 4, 1960, when Hawaii became the 50th state.
Although the flag has evolved over time as new states have joined the union, the initial 13 stripes have remained.
The Congress of the Articles of Confederation picked white to represent purity and innocence, red to represent valor and hardiness, and blue to represent vigilance, perseverance, and justice for the flag.

Is Flag Day a federal holiday?

Although Flag Day has never been an official government holiday, it was declared a national holiday in 1949 by then-President Harry Truman.

Businesses and schools do not close on Flag Day, although the president does issue a proclamation each year to recognize the occasion.

“On Flag Day and during National Flag Week, we commemorate the journey of development depicted in our banner and pay tribute to the inspiration it gives Americans at home and abroad,” President Joe Biden said in a proclamation issued on June 10, 2022.
