Who is Don Winslow?

On October 31, 1953, in New York City, Winslow was born.

He was raised in Perryville, a coastal community close to the Rhode Island community of Matunuck.

He attributes his ability to write to his parents, who were both storytellers and sailors who welcomed other sailors over to share their own stories. His mother worked as a librarian and his father was a non-commissioned officer in the US Navy. They encouraged Winslow to start telling stories himself.

At the University of Nebraska, he studied African history as his major. [3] His trip to southern Africa during his college years ignited a lifelong interest in the region.

Before moving to New York City to pursue a career as a writer, Winslow traveled to California, Idaho, and Montana. He then worked as a movie theater manager and later as a private eye in Times Square, “before Mickey Mouse took it over.”

He departed to pursue a master’s in military history with the intention of joining the Foreign Service, but he ended up working for a friend’s photographic safari company in Kenya instead. He organized excursions there as well as hiking tours around southwest China. Later, he oversaw Shakespeare plays during the summers in Oxford, England.
